Aging is When…

Aging is when…

Everything hurts and what doesn’t hurt, doesn’t work.
The gleam in your eyes is from the sun hitting your bifocals.
You feel like the night after and you haven’t been anywhere yet!
You get winded playing chess.
Your children begin to look middle aged.
Your knees buckle and your belt won’t.
After painting the town red, you have to take a long rest before applying a second coat.
You just can’t stand people who are intolerant.
The best part of your day is over when your alarm clock goes off.
You burn the midnight oil until 9pm.
Your back goes out more often than you do.
The little gray haired lady you help across the street is your wife.
You get your exercise acting as a pallbearer for your friends who exercised.
You remember today that your wedding anniversary was yesterday.
You have too much room in the house and not enough room in the medicine cabinet.
You sink your teeth into a steak and they stay there.

Thought you’d enjoy this!! Have a simply marvelous day!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

The season is upon us.  Yes, Thanksgiving has arrived, bringing with it family, friends, football, black friday and so much more.

So often we forget what the holiday is truly about.  It’s a time for us to give thanks for a bountiful harvest and for those blessings that we have been graced with.

So before we head to the table and thank the good Lord for the turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, cranberries, pumpkin pie and more, lets pause a moment to give thanks for our blessings, our friends and all that life has brought us in the past year.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving!

Remembering Joe Schmidt

I just received word today that my cousin Liz’s husband Joe, passed away suddenly of an undiagnosed heart issue yesterday.

My memories of Joe are few, though what I do remember is that he was a man who had a wonderful laugh and was always smiling. As a child, when we’d go to family outings at my great Aunt Gerts home, he’d be there with Liz and their girls, always smiling and engaging in conversation with the cousins, no matter what their age.

Family is what molds us, what shapes us and what holds us together through thick and thin. It never ceases to amaze me how many lives are touched by one person.

I will always have fond memories of Joe… may he rest in peace.

Feel free to check his Facebook page located here: In Memory of Joe Schmidt

Remember to keep close those you love and reach out to those who you have lost contact with for some reason or another.  Life is too short.

The Donkey….

The Pastor entered his donkey in a race and it won.

The Pastor was so pleased with the donkey that he entered it in another race and it won again.

The local paper read:
Pastor’s ASS OUT FRONT.

The Bishop was so upset with this kind of publicity that he ordered the Pastor not to enter the donkey in another race.

The next day the local paper headline read:
BISHOP SCRATCHES Pastor’s ASS.

This was too much for the Bishop so he ordered the Pastor to get rid of the donkey.

The Pastor decided to give it to a Nun in a nearby convent.

The local paper, hearing of the news, posted the following headline the next day:

NUN HAS BEST ASS IN TOWN.

The Bishop fainted.

He informed the Nun that she would have to get rid of the donkey so she sold it to a farmer for $10.
The next day the paper read:

NUN SELLS HER ASS FOR $10
.

This was too much for the Bishop so he ordered the Nun to buy back the donkey and lead it to the plains where it could run wild.

The next day the headlines read:

NUN ANNOUNCES HER ASS IS WILD AND FREE.

The Bishop was buried the next day.

The moral of the story is . . . being concerned about public opinion can bring you much grief and misery . . even shorten your life.

So be yourself and enjoy life.

Stop worrying about everyone else’s ass and you’ll be a lot happier and live longer!

Have a nice day!

PS try to stay cool in this super hot weather and never leave your pet or children unattended in a car with the windows up.

Thoughts on Holiday Travel - Complete with Intrusive Pat Down!

It’s that time of year again where we, en mass hit the airports to fly to our respective homes to celebrate with the ones we love.

Now I know that the country is up in arms over the whole idea of full body ex-rays and intrusive body pat downs but I’ve come to look at it in another way.

First of all let me say that I will happily decline the full body x-ray, I’m sorry but I don’t feel the need to expose myself to the low levels of radiation needed for such things, heck even at my dental office they put you in lead while shooting pictures of your teeth with their x-ray machines, so why would I allow for the feds to shoot me with radiation. So that being said I have decided that it would be so much more fun to elect for the full body pat down, after all if they feel the need to feel me up, have at it. Now this might make them uncomfortable but really I don’t care. If they have boob, back of knee or groin fetishes, that’s their thing. If we Americans all elected for the full body pat down how long do you seriously think they would keep it up?!?

The mental image I have of the full body invasive pat down is this. A little old lady with sagging breasts and her depends on goes through and respectfully declines having the x-ray. Some young guy comes up and with a female in attendance starts the search, over the din, you hear her waitress, smokers voice say “Sweet cheeks, make sure you thoroughly check me out. This is the most fun I’ve had in eons!”

So, I say let them have at it, get the pat down, have them run their hands over your body and make sure your not ‘hiding’ anything, after all this is cheaper than going to a peep show, where you too are not allowed to touch and you don’t have to tip them for doing a good job!

Happy Holidays!

Good Sportsman Ship Not Shown By Jets Assistant Coach

It’s disheartening to see an assistant coach on the sidelines of the New York Jets, show such poor judgment and even worse poor sportsmanship. I know as fans, we want our teams to win the games they play, but do we really want them to win playing dirty or having misguided coaches, making dirty plays such as the below (see the video),  throwing a knee into a player from the other team?

What does he gain from this? Perhaps he injures the player and takes him out of the game, if he gets caught (which he did on video no less) he could lose his ability to coach anywhere and what kind of example does he give to not only his players but those fans watching the game… That the New York Jets only care about winning, even if that means breaking the rules.

I’m quite sure at the time this happened, the coach in question did not think it all out, had he, I would hope that he wouldn’t have chosen to make a decision that in the end impacted more than I’m sure he ever intended.

Growing up, I played several team sports; soccer, basketball, soft ball and a few others. Competitive soccer was my thing. After graduating from high school, I then took time to coach a couple of club level soccer teams.

Good Sportsmanship was something that was preached by coaches, pushed by parents and made those who played the sport feel good. We didn’t have to win at all costs, nothing was better than to win a game because the team and each individual on the team played to the best of their ability. We players lived and breathed this belief and took pride in doing our best win or lose.

Good sportsmanship is something to take pride in.  It’s something that we teach our children and expect of any player in any sport be the player an amateur or professions.

Win or Lose it’s how we played that game that in the end really matters.

Success comes in five pound increments!

Success comes in five pound increments!

Having decided to lose this fluffy exterior that made me feel like the Pillsbury dough girl, I decided the best way to go for me is to turn weight loss into a game. After joining a big loser club better known as Weight Watchers, yes I am proud to be a Loser!, I set about a way to consider myself successful. The only way this is going to work for me, seeing as I have a short attention span and am easily overwhelmed, is to shed five pounds at a time and I must admit it’s working well; just about the time I am getting bored, I hit the five pound mark and bamo it’s another game for me. The next five are just around the corner!

I had to chuckle at my last meeting, our leader was recounting the latest reports about losing weight, saying that those who track their food intake are more apt to take off weight and keep it off. Thing is, weight watchers has been saying that for years and years.

Seems that those who have battled the bulge know for certain how it’s done, not that we all practice it with regularity. I have come to realize that I am not perfect, that I am going to do things that I might go GAH why did I eat that, but if I track it then I can look in the mirror and say to myself… GAH I ate that, then be done with the guilt and move on. I refuse to use self guilt as a reason to not get this done!

Even with eating out this last couple of weeks while my favorite Aussie family were visiting the states, I’ve managed to still lose weight by being careful and tracking what goes into my mouth! They say if you the LNB (licks, nibbles and bites) will do you in. So you put it down and amazing you don’t seem so inclined to say, “ooh just one bite won’t hurt me”

Remember, the only one who can lose the weight is you!!!

Weigh in is tonight … I’ll do the weight update as an edit after the meeting!

That’s it for now

Tales of a Fluffy Girl Going Thin

The longer I’m doing Weight Watchers the more I’m realizing that it’s not as complicated as some might think. As a foodie, I can appreciate the fact that they aren’t telling me what I can and can not eat, I’m doing that on my own. Expense wise, if you consider the fact that most of the other “diet” plans out there require you to buy their food PLUS veggies and other items they don’t supply, you actually save money with Weight Watchers, while learning how to eat for life.

I’ve been reading a book called “You Are What You Eat” by Dr. Gillian McKeith, in the book she basically tells you the same things I’m learning through WW. She is a big proponent of the home made smoothie; you sip your way thin while enjoying all the health benefits of the nutrients of the fresh fruits, veggies and juice used to make them. Something about a nice chilled smoothie on a warm day just makes everything right in the world!

One of the many things she states is this happy formula, Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Queen and Dinner like a Pauper. Amazing but true, you wake up with energy, you maintain that energy during the day with your light snacks and then you eat a light meal so your body isn’t weighed down by a heavy dinner.

After a month following WW, making my meetings and being honest with myself about what choices I’m making… I’m finding that I need to buy suspenders for my pants!

To date I am down 11.2 pounds!!! YAY Me!

If your thinking it’s that time for you to shed a few pounds, think about becoming a big loser too!! Remember we can lose weight if we keep it to 5 pounds at a time. Weight loss is not impossible unless we chose to make it so!

Have a fabulous hump day! You’ll see less of me in my next posting!

Kat is Getting Her Beach Body Back!

In preparation for Summer 2010, better known as bikini top and board shorts weather, I’ve been slowly dropping some much unwanted poundage. While being “fluffy” does have its advantages, such as one will float vs. sink, it has a decidedly huge down side as well.

As you know I began this year with great optimism on losing weight, knowing how to eat right and tracking my intake was the greatest challenge I faced. With little to show for my efforts, I finally admitted that I can’t do this on my own; I needed some guidance from professionals who know their way around weight loss, so I made the decision to go back to weight watchers.

Now, you might say Weight Watchers is for losers and guess what YOUR RIGHT. I am proud to say that I am a member of a big losers club. Turns out the lady who is leading the class I take, well she is normal. She’s down to earth and keeps weight loss real, supports everyone in their battle of the bulge and reminds us take it 5 pounds at a time. We can lose anything we wish, if we don’t set our goals so high they seem unattainable.

Really the only way you’re going to lose weight is by being accountable to yourself, learning how to eat both right and correct portions, making healthy choices at the restaurant or dinner table. Weight Watchers isn’t a program that tells you what you cant have, it actually encourages you to do what is right for you, just be willing to make choices, such as I can chose to go to a restaurant, buy a hamburger that has all the works, including but not limited to the artery clogging gunk that is so tasty we can’t seem to pass it up when it calls our names, a burger worth all the points I’m allotted during the entire day, or I can chose a better alternative that will fill me up and allow me to eat other delicious meals during the day, I’m being told one thing, be accountable to yourself for what you CHOSE to eat.

So far an 8.4 pound lost and a lot more to go, but I’ve chosen to get back to my old beach body self!! Updates will come =)

Have a fabulous Monday; Spring has sprung as your allergies can attest!!!

Enjoy!
