The Spirit of Giving…

I remember a story my mother told me about her two brothers, better known as Uncle Michael and Uncle David. Both have gone to heaven to celebrate the holidays with God.

Many years ago, when my mother and two uncles were young, my Uncle Michael decided to raise chickens. Now for those city slickers, who only think our eggs come from the cooler at the grocery store, eggs actually come from chickens. Nothing is better than a fresh laid egg; I used to raise chickens. Anyhow, I digress…

Uncle Michael had a brooder, which is where they hatch and raise chicks that then grow up to become the chickens we all know and love. A brooder needs a lamp to keep the babies warm.

Uncle David was just little, no more than five or six, he saved his pennies, and in those days it was just pennies and he with great pride purchased a light bulb for Uncle Michaels brooder. Well on Christmas day, Uncle Michael unwrapped his present and was overjoyed to receive a light bulb. Between the bulb and the fresh fruit in his stocking, which fresh fruit was expensive too, he had the most wonderful Christmas.

It gives one cause to think, how can one little boy be overjoyed with a simple light bulb and fresh fruit. Well when you have nearly nothing, the little things we take for granted, become a wonderful treasure.

So, while your out trying to figure what games, controllers and other items your going to purchase for your children, think back to a time when, a simple Light Bulb was the highlight of a little boys Christmas and ask yourself… in these days of excess, have we lost the simple understanding about what the Christmas Holidays mean?  The spirit of giving someone something with love behind it means more than all the material things in the world given without.

Have a wonderful Holiday!
